Catalina 38 “Voilá”
Race-bred performance with cruising comfort.
Designer: Sparkman & Stephens
Built by: Catalina Yachts (1978–1992)
Total units: 366
Length: 38 ft
Draft: Approx. 7 ft
Engine: Universal 24 hp diesel (early models had Atomic 4 gasoline)
A cruiser with racing DNA
Originally built from the mold of the Yankee 38, the Catalina 38 was reimagined by Frank Butler to offer the best of both worlds: competitive sailing performance and weekend cruising comfort. It was even selected for the prestigious Congressional Cup in 1980.
What makes it special?
Strong upwind performance — tracks like it's on rails
Sleek lines with long overhangs and a reverse transom
Redesigned interior for livability: U-shaped dinette, galley, nav station, and quarter berth
Molded hull liner with teak finishes and practical storage
Balanced spade rudder for responsive steering
Deep keel for excellent stability, though limiting in shallow waters
The Catalina 38 combines race-proven design with cruising functionality. Owners praise its solid build, excellent upwind performance, and classic lines. Unlike many boats from its era, Catalina Yachts remains in business and still offers support — a rare advantage for a vintage sailboat with such pedigree.
